[ 26 March 2002 ] "The Future of Data Dissemination
- Industry Content and Data Protection Codes"
CommerceNet Singapore (CNSG) and NIAC organised a Breakfast Forum
on Tuesday, 26 March 2002 at the Traders Hotel, Singapore. The event was supported by SBA. The theme for the Forum was "The Future of Data Dissemination - Industry
Content & Data Protection Codes". About 60 participants attended the forum.
The forum assembled together a distinguished panel of prominent legal
and industry experts and personalities in the E-Commerce arena. The forum
aimed to examine the practical issues of regulating the Internet, it is
preferred that a balanced and light-touch approach to ensure that minimum
standards are set for the responsible use of the Internet while giving
maximum flexibility to the industry players to operate. Industry self-regulation
and public education efforts to complement its light-touch regulatory
approach. These steps are important and form the strategic direction for
the healthy growth of Internet. The future of data dissemination may lie
in self-regulation and content guidelines; working on trusted framework
addressing concerns raised by the public and the industry.
Mr.Johnny Moo, Group Managing Director of CSA Holdings Limited spoke on
the objectives of the Industry Content Code. He also spoke on the salient
clauses that should be practised by all industry players.
Mr Charles Lim Aeng Cheng, Head, Law Reform and Revision Division, Attorney-General's
Chambers and Ms Wendy Yap Peng Hoon, State Counsel, Law Reform and Revision
Division, Attorney-General's Chambers both spoke on Model Data Protection Code. They stressed on the need for a new
comprehensive code which incorporates modern data protection principals.
Participants were alsogiven an overview of the model code.
